WHAT’S NEXT AFTER KCSE RESULTS?

The long-awaited 2023 KCSE results are finally here, stirring a myriad of emotions. Some of you may be basking in the glory of success, while others grapple with disappointment. But let me assure you, the grades on that paper do not hold the key to your destiny. In this fast-paced world, clinging to the belief that your KCSE results solely determine your future is an outdated notion we should discard. You are not a failure, in fact, your journey has just started.

Now I know that you had dreams and aspirations, but it’s crucial now to ground them in reality. The beauty of post-KCSE is that it gives you a chance to ponder on what comes next. Results can be both crushing and exhilarating, but swift decision-making is essential. Not everyone’s path leads to universities; some may find their calling in colleges, TVET institutions, or just pursuing their passions head-on.

Sure, pursuing the “big courses” may have been on your radar, but here we are, you are now faced with the reality of life, results are out and perhaps you have not met the set requirement but don’t lose hope and most certainly, don’t limit your options. There’s a vast array of possibilities out there, waiting to be explored. Take a moment, reflect then begin that journey of career exploration.

I wholeheartedly agree that education is important and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. In fact, I personally think that it’s the ultimate equalizer, whether a certificate, diploma or degree, all of them hold importance. You might not need them now but you will eventually need them at some point in life. That I assure you! So, what are your options now that you have finished form four?

1. Universities: For those meeting the minimum grade for university placement, diverse courses await in engineering, medicine, business, arts, education, and more.

2. TVET Institutions: These are also excellent institutions to acquire knowledge and skills in various sectors. From business and agriculture to entrepreneurship and engineering, these institutions provide practical learning methods, making you job-ready after completion.

3. TVET Colleges: Accredited to offer a range of courses, these colleges provide opportunities in hospitality, business, beauty, IT, and more. The good thing is that they offer a variety of short courses that can be completed within a short period, making you job-ready quickly.

4. Entrepreneurship: Now I am not an expert on entrepreneurship but we have seen how people have used their talents to generate income for themselves. Don’t just sit around, if you are able to, ask for assistance to open a small business that can generate little income as build your entrepreneurial skills. Use your talents, learn basic skills and set yourself up success. Goal is turning your talents into income. Don’t just dream; take action.

5. Professional Courses and Certifications: This is an area that you should keenly explore. The professional environment is changing, with a growing need for individuals to acquire at least one professional qualification before fully immersing themselves in the workforce. Ask yourself this question: “Why do seasoned professionals, well-versed in diverse fields, find themselves returning to attain coveted professional certifications? Industries are shifting every day, and relevant professional qualifications are becoming a must for careers. Accountants are going back to school to study Certified Public Accountants (CPA), Lawyers are pursuing Certified Secretaries (CS), and so on. This tells you that at some point, you will eventually have to do a relevant professional qualification, so why not start now? Visit https://sgb.ac.ke/  to explore the various professional courses relevant for a professional in Kenya. The beauty of professional exams is that you can start small, from a certificate advancing upwards. I could continue writing about the myriad options available, but the list may never end. So, let me conclude by saying that the result you received was not a future-determining factor, but a chance for you to think hard and explore the many options available if only you dare to reach out for them!
